Overbrook is an urban neighbourhood situated in Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward, in the east end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located across the Rideau River from the neighbourhood of Sandy Hill and is just to the south of Vanier. To the east of Overbrook is the former City of Gloucester. It was constituted as a police village in 1922 and was annexed by the City of Ottawa in 1950.[1]Overbrook, is a historic, culturally diverse neighbourhood on the Rideau River, founded in the early 20th century. Established as a police village in 1922 and annexed by Ottawa in 1950, it features early 1900s homes, such as the 1917 Overbrook Public School, alongside modern infill developments.
Key Historical Aspects of Overbrook, Ottawa

Early Development: Originally part of Gloucester Township, the area was owned by pioneers like the Sparks family in the late 19th century. A stone house from 1865 still stands on North River Road.

Police Village (1922-1950): Established to manage growth, the community faced challenges like major floods in 1928 and 1947.

Annexation (1950): Overbrook was annexed by the City of Ottawa, marking a shift from a rural-fringe community to an urban neighborhood.

Architectural Style: Dominated by pre-1960s homes, the area is known for its diverse, older housing stock, including infill projects and low-rise condos.

Development & Community: The Overbrook Community Association was founded in the 1970s. Recent developments include the 2015 Coventry Pedestrian Bridge (now Max Keeping Bridge) and access to the LRT at Tremblay Station.

Located on the bank of the Rideau River at the foot of Donald Street, an information kiosk was created and officially introduced on August XXth, 2025.
